Enterobiosis is a human intestinal parasitic disease caused by the nematode worm Enterobius vermicularis. At night, gravid female pinworms migrate from large intestine to perianal/perineal areas where they lay eggs. Pinworm infection has a cosmopolitan distribution and is more prevalent among children, potentially causing adverse effects on their behavior, school success and nutritional condition. We consider that enterobiosis is one of the most underestimated entero-parasitic infection in humans. The present study makes a critical review of several important aspects about enterobiosis, including biology and taxonmy of E. vermicularis, diagnostic tools, pathologic effects, epidemiology and tretament.
We analyzed the reproductive characteristics of four nets of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) which spawned in San Luis beach, sector Los Chivos, Cumaná, Sucre State.
Mochima National Park comprises a group of islands, as well as a mountainous area that has been well documented from the floristic point of view, registering1124 species of angiosperms. However, the limited knowledge of the vascular flora of the island area, was proposed as the objective of describing the flora and community structure of Isla Larga. A set of 28 quadrats of 100 m2 was established, and all individuals within them were measured, identified and quantified, and ecological indices were determined. A total of 2.225 individuals were registered, distributed in 59 species of angiosperms, including 54 genera belonging to 33 families. The best represented families were Euphorbiaceae (9 spp.), Cactaceae (5 spp.), Poaceae (5 spp.) and Mimosaceae (4 spp.) which accounted for 38.98% of the total number of species in the area. The diversity was 2.84 bits/inds; however, evenness was low 0.59 reflecting an inequitable distribution of species in the area. The highest value of importance value index (IVI), was for Rhizophora mangle (262,78), Croton pungens (172,82), Caesalpinia coriaria (139.36) and Opuntia caracassana (125.45). The dominance of these species may be related to the morpho-anatomical changes developed in these species to survive in the environmental conditions of the area, which allowed them to adapt more effectively than other species. Furthermore, they are species characteristic of the types of vegetation present in the area (tropophyle and mangrove forests). Pharingeal isolation of betahaemolithic streptococci using Todd-Hewitt broth in asymptomatic individuals with and without previous dental brushing http://hml-ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1315-01622014000300005&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Los estreptococos betahemolíticos son bacterias capaces de producir patologías graves y cuadros clínicos con secuelas permanentes, particularmente en la población infantil.
Beta-hemolytic streptococci are bacteria capable to inflict serious pathologies and leave permanent consequences, particularly in the children population. The pharyngeal exudate and posterior isolation in blood agar is the most common method used for their identification. Currently, it has been observed that some researchers recommend not to brush the teeth before the completion of the throat swab while some authors recommend brushing the teeth before the test. In consequence, the objective of the present study was to determine the isolation of these bacteria using Todd-Hewitt broth in asymptomatic individuals with and without dental brushing. The sample was a group of 203 asymptomatic children within the age 10 to 15 years old, of both sexes, enrolled in four schools from "Francisco Linares Alcántara" Municipality, Aragua State, Venezuela. The group of beta-hemolytic streptococci most often isolated corresponded to the group G (42%). The number of beta-hemolytic streptococci isolations was significantly higher (p = 0.0011) in the group who had not brushed their teeth (n = 17/104) in comparison with the group of youths who did (n = 2/99). The incubation on the cotton swab corresponding to the pharyngeal exudate in Todd Hewitt broth before the inoculation on the Blood Agar, favored noticeably the recuperation of beta-hemolytic streptococci compared with the technique of direct seeding the swab on blood agar. A weak agreement was found in the concordance strength (κ = 0.16943) between the used techniques and there were statistically significant differences between the number of beta-hemolytic streptococci isolations through the execution of both procedures (18 vs. 3; p =0.02060). These findings demonstrate that the no-teeth-brushing and the previous incubation of the swab? in Todd Hewitt broth enhances the isolation of these microorganisms.
The toxocariasis is the infection caused by Toxocara canis and T. cati, parasites of dogs and cats, respectively. Man is an accidental host, when is infected with eggs from these parasites. The larvae invade organs or the eyeball, producing two syndromes, visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans. The diagnosis presents difficulties due to non-specific symptoms and the larvae can only be evidenced by biopsies. Immunological methods are an alternative, but may have cross-reactions with other parasites. Due to limitations in the diagnosis of the disease, the main objective of this work was to identify the specific immunodominant antigens in excretion/secretion products of T. canis larvae, by Western blotting technique. The reaction conditions were standardized, by determining optimal antigen concentration and dilutions of reagents and sera. Subsequently, the standardized technique was performed using sera from individuals with toxocariasis, individuals with other parasitic infections and healthy individuals. The results showed that the optimal concentrations of excretory/ secretory antigen was 10 μg/strip, and dilutions of 1/100 and 1/5,000 for serum and conjugate, respectively. Recognition of immunodominant bands of 26, 40 and 57 kDa was observed only by sera from individuals with toxocariasis, while patients with other parasitic diseases and healthy individuals did not recognize any of these bands. Antigens of 26 and 57 kDa have been described as specific for the diagnosis of toxocariasis, while the 40 kDa band had not been previously identified. The Western blotting technique allowed a sensitive and specific diagnosis of human toxocariasis..
There are few fluorescent staining techniques used in studies of the bacterial cell cycle, so that the staining characteristics of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were analyzed by the modified differential fluorescent staining method and the association with the presence of DNA and RNA. The purpose of this study was to provide evidence on the reaction mechanism of modified differential fluorescent staining method, as well as offering the technique as a complementary tool in studies of the cell cycle. The cell cycle was evaluated in isolates of N. gonorrhoeae transferring a culture in optimal growth to BHI broth with 5% human blood. Aliquots were taken to prepare slide spreads for staining, before and after treatment with DNase and RNase at 5 to 120 min intervals, and the McNemar test was applied to verify the association of the staining reactivity before and after enzyme treatment. In the cell cycle, the bacteria staining was predominantly slightly fluorescent orange and the color sequence in the cycle was yellow, orange and green. Cells which stained orange or yellow, after the enzyme treatment, changed to slightly fluorescent green or almost imperceptible green, with statistically significant association (p < 0,05) between the yellow and orange slightly fluorescent or fluorescent with the presence of DNA and RNA. We conclude that DNA and RNA are involved in the yellow and orange dye by modified differential fluorescent staining method in the cell cycle of N. gonorrhoeae.
A base of industrial paint mixed with extract of plants of the genus Aloe was evaluated as a possible corrosion inhibiting coating. A phosphate buffered saline solution (BFS) was used to prepare the aqueous extract of Aloe saponaria and mixtures were prepared based industrial paint and the aqueous extract at different ratios (80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50). Plates of AA3003 aluminum alloy were coated and exposed to the marine atmosphere using the Sucre Atmospheric Corrosion Station I, located in the zone of Turpialito in the south of Gulf of Cariaco, Sucre State. To characterize the industrial paint base, extract and mixtures (base:extract), the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used, while the evaluation of the coatings was carried out once a month by visual inspection, photographic record and optical microscopy. The results of FT-IR identified functional groups of esters and hydrocarbons in all mixtures (base:extract), which are also present both in painting and in extract. Coatings formulated with the base paint and Aloe saponaria extract exhibited better performance against the marine atmosphere compared to coating with paint alone, the latter having blistering degradation. This behavior suggests that the aqueous extract may be acting as a stabilizer in coatings (base paint:extract) against aggressive media and showed no blistering and maintained their consistency during the duration of the experiment..
Noticeably the technology has expanded in breadth and depth across all areas of knowledge. This documentary research presents a study of four alternative methodologies that support the development of ES, with the purpose to make a critical analysis of them, in relation to the fundamental activities of software development and good practices underlying software engineering (SE). As a result, the studied alternatives converge on several factors: a) software process, b) the need of an interdisciplinary development team, c) the quality of materials and instructional strategies (teaching and assessment) used in the production, d) testing and product validation. In the other hand, each methodology has its operation scheme and the ones that stand out for their precision and quality are the ISE-OO of Galvis (1998) and Model MOOMH of Benigni (2004).
The objective of this study was to determine the applicability of the Weibull model to predict the moisture and salt contents and their diffusion coefficients, during the salting of catfish slices using mixtures of NaCl, KCl, CaCl² and MgCl². The effective water and salt diffusion coefficients (De) were determined using the normalized Weibull model. The high coefficients of determination (R² > 0.99) and low mean relative error (MRE< 10%) suggest that Weibull model is suitable and accurate for predicting both moisture and salt contents and determining De. Values of the scale parameter of Weibull model for fractional amount of moisture and salt contents ranged from 0.665 to 0.761 d and from 0.640 to 0.887 d, respectively; while values of shape parameter ranged from 0.467 to 0.669 and from 0.511 to 1.218, respectively. Values of De for water ranged approximately from 1.13 x 10-10 to 1.81 x 10-10 m²/s while values for salt ranged from 0.63 x 10-10 to 1.80 x 10-10 m²/s. Significant experiences of social integration of university students by textual production of rap http://hml-ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1315-01622014000300011&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Las universidades comienzan a promover políticas dirigidas a eliminar las discriminaciones, fomentando espacios de participación comunitaria, social y educativa.
Universities are beginning to promote policies aimed at eliminating discrimination, promoting spaces for community, social and educational participation. Therefore, the incorporation of college students to their academic discourse community is encouraged, since they are young people with a particular history and complex social life, which are included in different ways into the educational system. The overall purpose is to assess the intercultural resource "rap" in the academic practice of textual compositions by new students in the Extensión Región Centro- Sur of the Universidad de Oriente. In this qualitative research, the content analysis is used to account for the experiences of eight key informants interviewed, students of Industrial Engineering or Systems Engineering. It is intended to understand the reasons for the behavior of these students, analyzing both the thematic as the overall quality of writing, the reality in which they arise, and how they express their living experiences. The findings indicate that, despite the difficulties in the writing of texts: a) students, in addition to reporting, are identified with this musical style, because its main purpose lies in provoking reactions, b) the strategy allows to cater a heterogeneous population academically and culturally, c) university students may recognize, as any artistic expression, musical text resulting from this interpretation, which has a social impact in a given group of persons. This strategy provides an opportunity to reflect on the process of integral development and deepens in the construction of a new model of society. Statistical model to associate variables of the student with his school performance http://hml-ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1315-01622014000300012&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt El objetivo fundamental de este trabajo fue determinar asociaciones entre variables categóricas referentes al alumno con su rendimiento escolar, en planteles estatales de los municipios Gómez y Marcano del estado Nueva Esparta, mediante el ajuste del Modelo de Asociación de Efectos de Columna. In both municipalities, the characteristics: good feeling of the student when going to school and mastering of mathematical operations, were also linked to school performance.
In the context of Modernity, the evaluative process is turned into an instrument for the formation of the wished individual, according to the official profile, given place to the homogenization of individuals by promoting the internalization of cultural norms in accordance with the demands of the State and dominant groups. A detached individual is produced when his/her feelings and values, the subjectivity of his/her interior world, are annulled. Concerning this problem, the objective of this research is to determine the theoretical foundation needed for the re-signification of the Educational Evaluation as a means for the formation of the human being as a person. Methodologically, a hermeneutic analysis of the theories of the Ontology of the Modern Totality and the Ethics of Alterity was carried out, considering for this references of known authors in the world of Philosophy, Epistemology of the Educational Evaluation and Critical Pedagogy. The results show that the discursive demonstration stands out the positiveness of the Evaluation and the conformation of an Evaluative proposal from the Ethics of Alterity. In conclusion, the Educational Evaluation can be transformed from a thing-making and alienating process of the human being into the fecundity for the formation of individuals on the basis of the Ethics of Alterity.
In July 2011, a cross sectional study in the rural community La Carolina, Heres Municipality of Bolivar state, was conducted to determine the prevalence of anti-Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies among inhabitants. A set of 91 people of all ages and both genders was evaluated, although the group was predominantly female (65.9%) and under 20 years old (63.8%). None of the persons in the group turned reactive. In spite of the absence of seropositivity found, it is recommended to implement measures for epidemiological surveillance and health education as this is a community where some factors converge that may determine the existence of Chagas disease. ¿Blastocystis sp. or B. hominis?
Blastocystis spp. is the etiologic agent of blastocistosis. It is one of the major intestinal parasites affecting humans with a widespread geographic distribution, including Venezuela. It was originally named Blastocystis hominis and associated to fungi or protozoa. Nevertheless, recent phylogenetic studies with molecular tools revealed a closer relationship of this species with Stramenopiles or Chromists. Furthermore, it has a high genetic diversity being considered a complex of several genotypes or subtypes (ST), which strongly suggest limiting the name to Blastocystis spp. Thus, Blastocystis hominis is an invalid taxon. The need for homogenizing taxonomic and systematic nomenclatures of Blastocystis spp., is highlighted.
