In this study, the blade leaf anatomy is characterized from eight tree species that predominate in the Nicolasito Experimental Station of the Agronomy Faculty of the Venezuela Central University, which distinguish different plant communities present in the station, such as: Congriales, Quereberales and Saladillales. They are: Andira inermis, Bowdichia virgilioides, Byrsonima crassifolia, Caraipa llanorum, Couepia paraensis, Curatella americana, Duroia sprucei and Sweetia nitens. The objective of the research was to interpret the anatomical characteristics present in those species that facilitate their adaptation to the environmental conditions prevailing in the area. Leave samples were collected from those located at full exposure, from three individual trees by zone, and were fixed in FAA until processing. The latter was performed following classical techniques for the preparation of semi-permanent slides observable under the optical microscope. Some measurements and quantitative determinations, as well as histochemical tests were performed. The results reveal that these species showed mostly xeromorphic characteristic that allow them to adapt to the seasonal droughts and the influence of intense light. Among these features: thick cell wall and cuticle, compact mesophyll, a high proportion of palisade parenchyma, vascular bundles with schlerenchimatic extensions, among others. Growth and ionic content of Aloe vera (L.) Burm.
In order to evaluate the effect of salinity on Aloe vera, visual symptoms, growth (new leaves, necrotic basal leaves, leaf volume and fresh and dry biomass), and ionic content (K+, Na+, Cl-, Ca2+ and Mg2+) were studied in hydroponically cultivated plants during 75 days under different saline concentration: 0, 50, 100, 150, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 mol.m-3 NaCl. In general, the plants survived the experiment; however, the number of new leaves, leaf volume, fresh and dry biomass decreased in the salt treatments. Furthermore, the number of necrotic basal leaves increased, and dehydration and roots necrosis were observed. Salt treatments increased the concentration of K+, Na+, Cl-, Ca2+ and Mg2+ but that of K+ decreased. The results revealed that, although plants survived to salinities as far as 300 mol.m-3 NaCl, their growth was adversely affected as of 50 mol.m-3 NaCl, with more drastic effects as the salinity increases, at the same time that visual symptoms appear and ion contents are altered. Catalogue of the ceratopogonidae of (diptera: nematocera) registered from Venezuela and their agro-ecological and public health importance http://hml-ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1315-01622014000400005&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Los Ceratopogónidos son insectos pequeños conocidos en Venezuela comúnmente como “jejenes”, siendo algunas especies vectoras de patógenos como virus, protozoarios y helmintos para el humano y los animales. The variables observed were: work on Saturdays; work on Sundays and holidays; rest time; bringing work home and time shared with family and friends. The information obtained was analyzed under the Fisher test. No differences were observed that show working hours represent a psychosocial risk among the professionals under study. However, they do reduce rest time and even some professionals bring home work activity to finish it.
Acute leukemias are malignant hematopoietic cells of immature proliferations of the blastic type, whose progressive accumulation is accompanied by a decrease in the production of normal myeloid elements. Transcription of inactive tumor suppressor genes by hypermethylation of CpG islands in promoter regions, has been a focus of researchers as a causal factor in hematological malignancies. The purpose of this study was to determine hypermethylated regions of chromosomal spread samples using Alu I and relate these regions with sites of suppressor gene associated to acute leukemia tumors. From an analysis of a 30 bone marrow samples, 18 were diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Acute Lymphoid Leukemia, and 12 underwent cell culture. Chromosomal spreads were stained with Giemsa after being previously digested with the enzyme Alu I. In patients with acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoid leukemia it was observed that 16/18 (88%) and 12/12 (100%) had abnormally stained regions, single in four and three methylated regions observed in acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoid leukemia, respectively, no association was found in the literature with methylated genes, which was highly significant (p < 0.01) in both conditions. This shows the usefulness of this technique for the identification of methylated areas, since they have provided the foundation and the molecular basis for a better targeted therapeutic approach with demethylating agents, both in acute leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes. Psammolestes arthuri naturally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi found in sympatry with Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma maculata on bird nests in Anzoátegui state, Venezuela http://hml-ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1315-01622014000400008&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt In Venezuela, Chagas' disease is a public health problem with around 2 million people infected and more than 6 million under risk of infection. In this study the presence of the triatomid Psammolestes arthuri is reported in nests of different species of birds from rural communities of Anzoátegui State, some of them found naturally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, in sympatry with other species of triatomines (Rhodnius prolixus y Triatoma maculata). A total of 3,277 triatomine specimens were collected in 478 nests from 6 species of birds (Phacellodomus rufifrons, Troglodytes aedon, Icterus icterus, I. nigrogularis, Cacicus cela y Psarocolius decumanus). It was found that 99.05% (3246/3277) of specimens were P. arthuri and 0.95% (31/3277) other triatomine species, from which 0.57% (19/3277) were R. prolixus and 0.37% (12/3277) T. maculata. Only 0.12% (4/3246) of P. arthuri were infected with T. cruzi. The parasitological characterization of one T. cruzi isolate in white male NMRI mice showed high affinity for cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscle cells, with a peak parasitemia of 2.4 x 104 parasites/ mL blood stream forms of T. cruzi and 100% mortality of inoculated mice. This isolate was molecularly typed as belonging to TcIII genotype. The results show that in Anzoátegui State, P. arthuri predominantly feed on blood of birds, representing a low risk for vector transmission of Chagas' disease to humans.
This study reports the chronology and epidemiological pattern of human mortal accidents inflicted by venomous animals in Venezuela for the period 1980 to 1999. National mortality data were obtained by passive epidemiological surveillance through inspection of series E905 and X20 to X29, registered in the mortality and vital statistics yearly records, produced by the Venezuelan National Health System. The mortality rates per year and the average rate for the 20-year period per 100.000 inhabitants were assessed from the 1,494 deaths recorded in this period. The main cause of death was snakebite (n = 921; 61.6%), followed by envenoming by hymenoptera (n = 310; 20.7%) and scorpion stings (n = 185; 12.4%). The higher frequency of deaths due to snakebites corresponded to 1987 (62 cases), whereas for hymenoptera were in 1980 and 1991 (21 cases each) and 1995 for scorpions (18 cases). For any of these etiological factors mortality was higher for males (80.4%). The average annual mortality rate for the studied period (deaths per 100,000 inhabitants) per etiological agent was 0.24 (snakes), 0.08 (hymenoptera) and 0.05 (scorpions). These epidemiological data indicated that the accidents caused by venomous animals represent a collective health problem in Venezuela.
The surface of TiO2 was modified with the nucleotides adenosine 3’-monophosphate (AMP’3) and Adenosine 5’-monophosphate (AMP’5). The adsorption of nucleotides was adjusted to Langmuir´s adsorption model, determining that the optimal condition for TiO2 modification was at neutral pH. UV-Visible Diffuse Reflectance and IR Attenuated Total Reflectance spectra show that the chemisorption of nucleotides take placed on TiO2 anatase. The new catalysts (TiO2-nucleotide) improved the photodegradation of p-nitrophenol in a wide range of pH as compared with the titanium dioxide precursor. Most photoactivity was generated by using the new photocatalytic in the degradation of p-nitrophenol at pH = 6, obtaining high values for the pseudo first order kinetic constant (0.0254 min-1 and 0.0244 min-1 for TiO2-AMP’3 and TiO2-AMP’5, respectively). For all pH, the trend obtained for the photodegradation was: TiO2-AMP´3 TiO2-AMP’5 > TiO2. Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics shows that the contribution of the surface reaction rate governs the oxidation of the contaminant.
In order to identify temporal weather patterns in Margarita Island, Venezuela, time series were analyzed between 1966 and 2012 for the accumulated precipitation and evaporation, and between 1975 and 2008 for the average wind speed. The Cluster analysis performed showed a marked seasonality: January to June form a dry period characterized by low precipitation (95 mm period-1), and from July to December there is a moderate rainy period (264 mm period-1), which intensifies during the last two months in response to a latitudinal decline of Arctic cold fronts, with both interdecadal cycles of droughts and extreme rainfall. Evaporation was high surpassing precipitation throughout the year (276 and 249 mm period-1 in the dry and rainy periods, respectively). The season of highest average wind speed corresponded to February to June ( = 6.1 m s-1), a period with appropriate wind speed to generate upwelling, while during the rest of the year the winds are weaker ( or = 4.6 m s-1).
University studies represent a challenge that is not always easy; they involve facing some conflicts that affect universities, caused by the loss or lack of human values that allow a harmonious coexistence. Therefore, developing a sense of belonging in students to their school will promote both, their social inclusion in the university environment, and the path towards academic excellence. In this sense, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the sense of belonging and social inclusion, from the expectations of newly admitted students at UDO Anaco. It was based on the theories of social exchange (Homans 1959), Rational Choice (Abitbol and Botero 2005), and Affective Link (Buchanans 2000). The analysis was framed on the qualitative approach and the phenomenological method to interpret reality from the perspective of those whose live it. Key informants were a group of new students of Industrial and Systems Engineering, of the third academic period of 2011. The categories of analysis were: sense of belonging, social inclusion and be a college student. The research made it possible to know that there are situations that reflect problems related to the belonging and identification of students with the university. It is concluded that strengthening the sense of belonging of students will depend on the institutional mechanisms of inclusion and the perception of students.
Self-assessment is part of a complex process of inquiry that allows improving the functioning of the units studied and therefore seeks the transformation of institutional work. Thus, the Research Group for the Evaluation of Graduate Programs at the Universidad de Oriente (EVALPOST), undertook a self-assessment process of the MA in Education with specializations, through an evaluative research, in order to obtain information about the current status of the program. The research path required the consideration of four moments of the evaluation model designed by Salcedo Galvis (1997): Initial diagnosis of the situation, selection of indicators, definitions and treatment outcomes. To accomplish these phases some adaptations were made to the questionnaire designed by the author, in order to contextualize and adjust it to the specifics of the program. Following the assumed model, indicators and management variables were selected.
