Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and includes an acute phase followed by a chronic phase, with low parasitemia and clinical manifestations range from no symptoms to severe heart disease. Diagnosis has limitations due to the low sensitivity of the parasitological techniques and the low specificity of immunological ones. Molecular techniques, especially PCR, that detects specific DNA sequences of the parasite, is an alternative. Several targets have been described for amplification, the most used because of its high sensitivity and specificity are the PCR that amplified satellite DNA and minicircle kinetoplast DNA of T. cruzi. Although the PCR technique also has some limitations in terms of cost, infrastructure needed and sensitivity in the chronic phase of the disease, has many advantages, especially in acute cases, congenital Chagas, in immunodeficiencies and are appropriate in the evaluation and monitoring of treatment. More advanced variants have been developed, such as; real time PCR, isothermal amplification and detection of PCR products by chromatographic strips. It would be appropriate to combine the use of parasitological, immunological and molecular techniques according to the suspected phase of the disease and patient characteristics. In Venezuela, the molecular techniques for diagnosis of Chagas disease are only used in research laboratories. It would be advisable to incorporate the molecular diagnostic tests to the group of techniques.for diagnosis of Chagas disease in the country.
Based on the points discussed here, we can consider that all recent reports tend to suggest that there is more of a protein involved in inhibiting hemostatic activities in reptiles and mainly Didelphis gender of mammals. These proteins can exert its neutralizing ability in isolation, as units with high specificity for the enzyme. They could add their inhibitory capacity acting separately, as well as acting as sub-units under their coupling to promote its inhibition, existing as a mixture of specific inhibitors and nonspecific, acting separately or through a combination of some or all of the above.
Beta-hemolytic streptococci of groups A (EBHGA, Streptococcus pyogenes), C (EBHGC) and G (EBHGG) induces the production of anti-streptolysin O antibodies (ASTO) in infected individuals. In Venezuela, the most common tests used to measure these antibodies are bacterial toxins neutralizing and indirect (passive) agglutination with latex particles. Individuals colonized by the aforementioned bacteria can remain as asymptomatic carriers. The purpose of this study was to determine ASO titers and frequency of beta-hemolytic streptococci in 203 students 10-15 years old from the municipality Francisco Linares Alcantara. The ASO titers were determined by neutralization and indirect (passive) agglutination tests; EBH frequency was determined through the throat swab culture, which was performed on blood agar at 5%. It was found that 88.6% (180/203) and 53.2% (108/203) of the individuals had normal titers by the method of neutralization and agglutination, respectively. The most frequently isolated EBH belonged to G group (42%), followed by B (26%), A (11%) and C (5%) groups. There was a large discrepancy between the results from culture and serology. The Fisher exact test found no significant difference between the proportions of high titers for groups of healthy patients and asymptomatic carriers. These results indicate that the behavior of the ASTO titers is similar in both groups.
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) disease is characterized cytogenetically by t(9q,22q)(q34,q11), which produces the hybrid gene: BCR-ABL on chromosome 22q known as Ph (+). The main published transcripts correspond to b2 / a2, b3 / a2, e2a2 and e19a2, whose sizes depend on the breakpoint that occurs in the chromosomes. The objective of this study was to determine the BCR-ABL transcripts present in Venezuelan patients with CML. Ninety bone marrow samples were analyzed from patients diagnosed with CML. Chromosomal analysis was performed by conventional cytogenetic techniques and molecular biology techniques (RT-PCR). It was found that 96.6% of the cases presented the Ph (+) chromosome and 3.3% a normal karyotype, being the most frequent transcripts b3a2 (50.0%), b2a2 (40.0%) and the co-expression of transcripts b3a2 / b2a2 and e1a2 / b3a2 in (6.6%) and (3.3%), respectively. Variants of the transcripts b3a2 and b2a2 found in this study are similar to those reported in the literature, indicating the similarity of the distribution of the major transcripts of this rearrangement found in the patients evaluated with those in populations geographically close or racially similar. These results support the usefulness of the methodology of molecular biology applied to achieve a more accurate diagnosis of CML through the detection of BCR-ABL rearrangement, which has been identified as important in choosing the most appropriate therapy depending on the type of transcripts found and their responsiveness to treatment. At the same time, they justify further studies with larger numbers of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. Detection of cagA gene and typing vacA gene of Helicobacter pylori in biopsies of patients with gastric symptoms in Cumana, Sucre state, Venezuela http://hml-ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1315-01622015000300009&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Helicobacter pylori has been associated with gastric diseases such as gastritis, ulcers, lymphoma gastroduodenal and is considered a risk factor for the development of gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to characterize vacA genotypes and to determine the presence of cagA gene in biopsies from patients with gastric symptoms treated at the University Hospital Antonio Patricio de Alcalá of Cumaná, Venezuela. Sixty nine patients with endoscopic indication were evaluated using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Only 42 (60.86%) of those patients were positive for amplification of vacA and/or cagA and of these, 54.76% amplified for both genes. The predominant genotype was m1s1 (61.90%) followed by mixed infections (33.33%), being the most frequent associations among strains with genotypes m1s2, m2s2 and m1s1. From the biopsies performed 72.5% were negative for the cagA gene. However, this was found to be associated mainly to genotype m1s1 (17.39%). Statistically highly significant correlations were found among the allelic forms m1 and s1 (ρ = 0.732), s2 and m2 (ρ = 0.643), significant m1 and s2 (ρ = 0.279). Gene cagA showed highly significant correlations with m1 (ρ = 0.509), m2 (ρ = 0.447) and significant with s1 (ρ = 0.319) and s2 (ρ = 0.263). These results show the existence of co-infections with different genotypes of H. pylori in the studied population. They, would explain in part the low incidence of severe gastric pathologies despite being present in the region virulent genotypes of this bacterium. The high percentage of coinfections observed could be the result of the influence of geographic and ethnicity factors in the region where the study was conducted.
An experimental study was carried out on the adsorption of petroleum hydrocarbons (kerosene, diesel and heptane) from oily water flowing through a fixed bed column packed with hydrophobic sugarcane bagasse particles. The latter were previously hydrophobized with nonionic surfactant Span 80 (sorbitan monooleate, HLB 4,3) to change the absorption capacity of the substrate. The effects of initial contaminant concentration, feed flow rate and bed height on the column´s adsorption capacity and operation time, were analyzed by means of a multifactorial design. In general, the results showed that hydrocarbon removal efficiencies were greater than 90%, which indicated the feasibility of using hydrophobic sugarcane bagasse as an adsorbent bed. The effects of feed flow rate and bed height were statistically significant (p < 0,01) for bed adsorption capacity and operation time, being 574 mg hydrocarbon/g bed and 430 min their respective maximum values. Experimental results could be predicted by surface mathematical models with correlation coefficients greater than 90% for 99% of confidence. A physical desorption process for bed regeneration was used, which led to recover up to 35% of the original bed capacity, with a calorific value of 45.408 kJ/kg ± 37, with an increase of 40% over that of the hydrocarbon free bagasse (32.381 kJ/kg ± 325).
The ultraviolet radiation is considered an emerging technology which consists in subjecting the surface of the food to light wavelengths ranging from 200-280 nm, and it was found that the greatest germicidal effect is achieved at emissions of 254 nm. The dose used are 0.2 to 20 kJ/m2, and the distance between the product and the lamp varies from 10 to 40 cm. Microbial inactivation by ultraviolet light is produced by the direct absorption of ultraviolet energy by the microorganism, and a photochemical reaction resulting that changed the intracellular biochemical structure of the molecules (probably the nucleic acids) that are essential for the survival of the microorganism. In turn, it induces defense mechanisms in the metabolically active tissue of fruit and vegetables, causing the production of phytoalexins. This is useful as an alternative treatment to prolong the shelf life of products, because it requires a low investment, short exposure time and does not significantly affect the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of fresh fruits. In this review, the principles, factors and mechanisms of action affecting the antimicrobial activity and the application of ultraviolet light in fruit are discussed. In addition, the aspects that influence the effectiveness and impact of UV light on the microbial inactivation in whole or cut fruits, physicochemical changes that occur in these substrates once treated and some recent research in other food products are studied.
Transesterification reaction of several acid carboxylic esters with methanol, via SN2-like, using HCl and NH3 as catalysts, have been studied using electronic structure methods of interchange-correlations B3PW91, combined with 6-31++G(d,p) basis set. Activation and thermodynamics parameters show that in the presence of ammonia and hydrogen chloride, the values of free energy of activation are much smaller (ΔΔG≠< 0) than without catalyst, favoring the transesterification process, being, in most cases, hydrogen chloride the mostactive catalyst. The analysis of natural bond orbital (NBO, for its acronym in English) shows that the catalytic process is concerted and synchronous, where the leaving group protonation and nucleophile deprotonation coordinates evolve simultaneously.
This paper describes the main processes and changes that account for the phonological structure through which different Spanish loanwords have entered kari'na, a Carib language spoken in Anzoátegui, Venezuela. Several approaches have been discussed to explain the adaptation of loanwords to the borrower language. The phonetic approach proposes that adaptation of loanwords is determined only by the perceptive grammar component, regardless of the rules and/or constraints of the donor language. This position is held by Silverman (1992) and Peperkamp and Dupoux (2003), among others. On the other hand, the phonological approach, whose proponents include Paradis (1996) and LaCharité and Paradis (2005), among others, argue that the phonology of the borrowing language plays an important role in the phonological adaptation of loanwords. The research was descriptive with a documentary and fieldwork design. For that purpose, the Kari'na-Spanish dictionary of Mosonyi (2002) was completely revised by withdrawing all entries that clearly constitute loanwords taken from Spanish. Once the loanwords were extracted, the phonological processes which allowed them to adapt themselves to kari'na were established. Several phonological strategies employed by the kari'nas to include loanwords from Spanish were detected: (1) vowel lengthening, (2) glottal insertion /j/, (3) consonants germination, (4) vowel reflection, (5) epenthesis and (6) changes of phonemes. It is concluded that the processes of adaptation of Spanish loanwords into the kari'na language are better explained following the phonological approach, because the same processes also work in their own language. The challenge of knowing: a dilemma between the academic and the empirical knowledge http://hml-ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1315-01622015000300015&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt La residencia del conocimiento es un enigma que aún está sin resolver.
The dwelling of knowledge is an enigma that is still unsettled. Thus, the appropriateness or not of certain knowledge is put under discussion. Academy assumes that science lies in its spaces and therefore, to approach Knowledge, we must go through classrooms, laboratories, libraries, amphitheaters. However, there are free, open spaces, without strict rules or poses, which generate knowledge that humans need to solve daily lives problems; to live, to be happy. The academy is nurtured of the latter even though she does not recognize it; when assumed as owner of the Knowledge, it tends to disconnect from those essential aspects of reality and its necessary understanding. In this paper, we address from a particular perspective, doing exegesis of the texts consulted, to discuss about what has happened and is happening between scientific and empirical knowledge. The purpose is to inquire about other possibilities to investigate. Debating, we conclude that alternate routes should emerge to facilitate a harmonious coexistence between that knowledge surnamed "ethno" and those called scientists. In this theoretical-reflective exercise, we favor a notion of research that even from the academy, must be respectful of other knowledge and lead to claim the Knowledge. It is a commitment for life, for a wise humanity that may "rest" in the globalized world through ICT as a possibility for Being and Knowing. Infestation of corn flakes by tobbaco beetle (Lasioderma serricorne; Coleoptera: Ptinidae) in urban semiarid region from Falcon state, Venezuela. medical importance http://hml-ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1315-01622015000300016&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Se presenta el caso de la infestación de hojuelas de maíz (corn flakes) por el insecto-plaga Lasioderma serricorne (gorgojo del tabaco) (Coleoptera: Ptinidae), en una vivienda del área urbana de zona semiárida del estado Falcón, Venezuela.
