The slaves of the Bolivar family, Hippolyta and Matea passed into history thanks to its link with the father of the country. Of literature written on the black Hippolyta, until now has some weight the discursive strategy with hints of apology to the selfless black mother, which emphasizes the ties of kinship with the great Venezuelan family through the milk and affection lavished to the boy Simon. This fraternized historiographical interpretation covers contradictions of gender, race and class in the colonial society and so evident in the reality of slavery. Hippolyta is assimilated to the white heroines model proposed by the androcentric discourse, through the concept of «republican motherhood» that legitimized the subordination and political disenfranchisement of women.
